หมายถึงการเรียนทีไม่จำเป็นจะต้องมีอาจารย์ผู้สอนอยู่กับนักเรียนในเวลาและสถานที่เดียวกัน
ในส่วนนี้เราได้รวบรวมบทเรียนออนไลน์ซึ่งใช้เรียนที่ไหนเวลาใดก็ได้
ตามแต่ผู้เรียนจะสะดวกมาเรียนเป็นการเรียนแบบมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กันลักษณะ
real time
ผู้เรียนต้องใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ และเครือข่ายสื่อสารทำงานกับทรัพยากรการเรียนทางไกล,
ผู้สอน
และผู้เรียนคนอื่น แต่ไม่จำเป็นต้อง onlineในเวลาเดียวกันบทเรียนจะมีให้เลือก
มีตั้งแต่บทเรียนทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์,เทคโนโลยีประวัติศาสตร์ตลอดจนถึงสันทนาการ
เครื่องมือสื่อสารแบบALN คือ WWW
การฝึกปฏิบัติเชิงเว็บที่ต้องการการประชุม online บ่อยๆ และขอความร่วมมือกับผู้อื่น
นั่นคือ ALN

How the term "ALN' came about?

ORIGIN OF ALN TERMINOLOGY
The origin of the ALN idea stems from a meeting in 1994
of a small number of Sloan grantees at the Omni Hotel here in New
York.
We had maybe 25 people there and it was a by-invitation only meeting.
At that meeting I recall making the point to the assemblage that we
had to
develop some terminology for what were doing, since we couldnt
just keep
referring to it. Our basic ideas involved cohort-style on-line
classes which were
actually taught by a professor and encouraged peer-to-peer collaboration.
We wanted to make a distinction with alternative models...providing
expensive
multi-media or knowledge-based software with no cohort-base or professor,
or the synchronous interactive TV model,
or the broadcast TV/videotape model. Roxanne Hiltz and Murray
Turoff mentioned that they had used the term Learning Networks
(in fact that is the title of one of their books).
I had previously been using the term asynchronous learning networks
and suggested we all adopt the terminology Asynchronous Learning
Networks.
The group agreed and I subsequently posted
an ALN definition on the www.sloan.org
web-site.
That would be about September 1994.
Asynchronous
distinguished between synchronous models e.g. interactive TV,
while Learning Networks is intended to capture the idea
that networks of people are essential to the process,
and that collaboration is achieved through computer networks.
Interesting to note that the 1995
Sloan Foundation Annual Report uses Asynchronous Learning Networks
and ALN
terminology, whereas the 1994
one refers to asynchronous learning networks
without capitalization and does not refer to ALNs.
That more or less fits my recollection i.e. that we really developed
the ALN idea sometime in the fall of 1994
and began using it more vigorously in 1995.
The Andriole et al paper is an early reference to ALN.
Steve Andriole was an attendee at the
1994 grantees meeting at the Omni, as were Burks Oakley,
Randy Lemke, Betsy Franks, Mary Beth Almeda,
and of course Roxanne and Murray, plus others.
A definition of ALN is in my paper (Asynchronous Learning Networks:
A Sloan Foundation Perspective) which is on the aln.
org website and was in V.1, No. 1, of JALN. John Bourne
and Olin Campbell used that as a basis for the definition that appears
on aln.org.
Today.
The definition of ALN posted on the
Sloan web-site (www.sloan.org)
has now been removed,
but I have a copy for anyone who might be interested.
It has been referenced in various publications.
By the way, the 1994 meeting referenced
here,
became the pre-cursor for the Annual ALN Conference which now attracts
about 550 people.
